#Whatajoy song brings to its listeners. Do you sing? We all have a song that brings a sense of warmth and comfort to us. Many of us have formed our favorite genre of music based on what our parents listened to. I know I’m a sucker for old-school R&B. Songstresses such as Whitney Houston, Anita Baker, Aretha Franklin, Patti LaBelle, and many others still tickle my fancy. I owe it to my mother for exposing me to good music – real music.
My mother exposed me to something even better than those extraordinary musicians – her own voice. I recall my mother singing all the time. Singing to herself and singing to me. It was like a breath of fresh air hearing her sing to me, and it also helped that she could sing very well! Now even if she sounded like a cat in the alley, I would’ve appreciated her voice nonetheless.
Because of her (and the commercials from First 5 California telling us about the importance of reading and singing to our children) I make sure I sing to my daughter every chance I get. I sing anything from Disney’s Beauty and the Beast to the Temptations. Trust me when I say it doesn’t matter if you don’t sound like Usher or Beyonce. I know I’m not be the best…but my daughter enjoys watching and hearing me try. Sing to your baby, and your child will reap the benefits of language sooner rather than later.
